Do you guys know where the Marine Science Station is? I'm a student there. We come into the springs all the time.

The manatees in Crystal River are all free range wild animals, No cages or enclosures, just natural spring water that they seek.

No, it is not illegal to touch them. There are rules that have to be followed and none of those rules state that they can't be touched, or that you can't interact with them.
The rules state that you can't chase or pursue, seperate a mother from its calf, disturb a resting or feeding manatees, no holding onto or riding them, no poking or prodding, can't give them food, can't corner or surround them, can't touch a manatee with telemetry devices. These are the rules. Touching them is not on list.

The water is anywhere from 3 feet to 10 feet deep depending on where you are. In the winter the manatees are in the clear water springs as seen in this video.
