New report out on the safest states, http://www.cqpress.com/product/Crime-State-Rankings-2008.html and I had the AIRIS
http://b27.cc.trincoll.edu/weblogs/AmericanReligionSurvey-ARIS/reports/ARIS_R...
report from a couple of weeks ago, and I got to looking at both and came to some interesting statistics. My state NM is 48th worst state to live in and has only 16% non-religious. (they did not ask me though!)

thanks for the honors!

  • On a different sort to state. Ie.Country. I have always found it odd that many atheist from around the world come to live here in the US in a country with a large Christian population, but never seem to want to migrate to countries with atheist friendly governments where religion is either suppressed, regulated, or banned. In fact historically all countries that ever officially adopted "State Atheism" have all been very suppressive with very limited freedoms.

  • @benthemiester The study has been done, and they expanded it to world wide and found that the most religious countries are the worst places to live They dont have socialized medicine, often abuse women and minorities, and are very backwards/no technology. If believers get their way, the USA will join that group soon.

  • @TacoJFK3226 See Wikipedia."Myth of the Flat Earth" in modern historiography.

  • In the year 2000, Monaco who's official state religion is Roman Catholicism had the lowest crime rate in the world. In that same year even Saudi Arabia when they were listed as having 97% of the populace as Muslims had a lower crime rate than the US. You have to understand that there is more to this than just arbitrarily citing numbers without taking into consideration other complex social and economic factors including many other factors as well.

  • @rednecktrucker1969 I was speaking of peer review studies cited in peer review journals that correlate religion with with crime. Let me use your standard for a moment. Nagasaki was once the Christian capital of Japan which had an almost zero crime rate. In Chile even if you you include atheist with agnostics they would still only represent only 8% of the country population yet they have a much lower crime rate than the US wich has 16.1% of Americans described themselves as agnostic and atheist.

  • The problem with these laymen correlation's is that they are never cited in peer review journals and that because peer review journals have to meet a certain standard and take many complex social factors into account. In fact I can cite peer review studies that indicate that church attendance can not only reduce crime but that people who attend church live longer healthier lives. There are also countries that have an official state religion with very low crime rates.

    NH FTW!!!

  • @rednecktrucker1969 True, I agree with that one.

  • @TacoJFK3226 It may have not started that way but it is that way now. Religion is a means of control.
