U.S. EMBASSY JOINS STRATEGIC DIALOGUE WITH CIVIL SOCIETY

As part of the U.S. government's ongoing commitment to protect and defend civil society worldwide, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton launched a Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society groups on February 16, 2011 in Washington D.C. The event was broadcast online in English, Spanish, Arabic and Russian. Secretary Clinton and dozens of other prominent guests participated in the event, as well as representatives from hundreds of civil society organizations around the world who listed to the discussion and asked questions via the Internet. The U.S. Embassy invited 15 top women leaders from Dushanbe to participate in the Strategic Dialogue with Civil Society via webchat at the American Corner. The webchat was hosted by Tammy Duffey-Janser of the U.S. Embassy's International Narcotics and Law Enforcement section, who specializes in government-community partnerships and women's issues. After the keynote speech by Secretary Clinton, Tammy led a vibrant discussion where the participants talked about the challenges facing Tajikistan and asked questions about the future role of the Embassy in supporting civil society in Tajikistan. During the discussion, many of these leaders learned about each other's programs and found areas for cooperation. English language discussion groups, movie showings, and speaker programs, and webchats such as this one take place at all five American Corners throughout Tajikistan on a regular basis.
