In-home Treatment

Physical and occupational therapists are racking up the miles in West Michigan. In this week's Doc Talk, Newschannel 3 took a look at the custom, in-home treatments offered by Borgess Medical Center.

Mandee McDonald is almost always on the move. She drives her own car about 100 miles a day, five days a week. As a physical therapist assistant, she treats patients in their homes.

McDonald has her patients' records in her laptop and there's rarely a reason to work from the office because her office must be mobile.

We can come in and help you become safe and function better in your home and in the community, said McDonald.

One of those helped by the in-home treatments is Kevan Peet, who underwent double knee surgery in February of 2009. As a builder and carpenter, his profession requires two strong knees, but during his recovery, he couldn't get to the hospital, so McDonald came to him.

They worked together for three weeks.

Sometimes you don't do the exercise exactly how it should be and she's there to point that out so you get the most benefit, said Peet. The therapist brought me a long way.

As long as you can function in the home and get out into the community when I'm done with my job, that's fine, said McDonald, so I'm happy with that.

McDonald is one of 20 physical and occupational therapists at Borgess VNA Home Care. The in-home service is available any time to those who are home bound and have a doctor order the care.
