The climate of fear engendered by cartel violence in many parts of Mexico, particularly in the Mexican State of Tamaulipas, has put a severe damper on tourism to the Border Towns of the area. Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas, a long favorite for Rio Grande Valley residents and Winter Texans, visitors from points north in the United States and Canada is suffering its due share, even though the town is relatively safe and calm. Vendors and tourists speak to the downturn in tourism and the real climate of security in Nuevo Progreso today.
Has there been any violence or kidnappings in N Progresso that you have heard? Is the army still at the entrance like they usually are? We have been going to Progresso for years but are unsure if it is still safe. I need to go to the dentist. We thought about sitting at the border and seeing how many go across. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Mary
