at the beginning waht hes doing on the bass drum is called "feathering" the drum, u dont hit it , u feel it, and is used to mark the 8th notes on which you add the swing and snare, but it really has notihng to do with backstage sound.

I know he does a fair bit of producing too, so maybe it is to control the sound of other various instruments going into the PA behind him.
He may change volume levels etc for each song?

its a macbook, i saw it every time when i wstched him at his solo shows, i don't see any mics or triggers, so would be interesting. on his big shows here starts his playbacks with it i think on a small jazz-gig like that. hmmm....maybe we'll find out

ja he always seems to have a macbook pro, maybe he has it there to record, or maybe he has some triggers ( i dont think so tho) or maybe he uses it to have control over his own mix or something
