their are 20 freight car types. well cars haul containers,flatcars are the oldest,gondolas are divided into 3 types box gondolas are used to haul scrap and loads that ship in small quantiles,coal cars haul coal, hopper cars not to be confused with coal cars are used for lose loads like grain,boxcars are divided into 3 types livestock transports haul animals, refrigerator cars haul also called reefers carry food,cube cars haul anything, auto racks haul cars,and tank haul fuel.

The Trench as railroaders call it is an expressway for trains. the Trench runs down Alameda Blvd and connects to the UP and BNSF terminals to the east and west of LA. before the trench was built both railroads had crossing accidents because trains keep running into cars. to fix the problem they ran the trains under the streets by building the trench. now trains can speed down Alameda Blvd without stopping for more on the Trench see the Extreme Trains episode Freight Train.
