Converting this depressed segment of I-277 (John Belk Freeway) into a tunnel would reconnect the orginal network of surface streets and join Uptown with the Historic South End. Financing would be through sale and development of the 30 acres of excess public right-of-way, created by the reconfiguation. This proposal was developed in 2008, gratis, by HNTB Corporation.
