Obama definitely could have chosen those last words of his better.

If you mouse-over the loading-bar-thing, Obama is doing The Wave at the end.

People study it for that purpose, but that doesn't mean that they achieve their goals. We've gotten off topic though: the market can't solve every problem, mostly because it doesn't want to. The market exists only to make as much money as possible, if it CAN exploit people, it will. That's why sweatshops exist and there's child workers in Indochina. The state's role should be to stop the market from exploiting its people- a responsibility to its people, not its companies, achieving a balance.

What is the purpose of Economics in real terms if not to understand people and their relations to consumption? Maybe controlling your stake in markets isn't its original purpose, but it certainly is what almost all people study it for now.

Limited resources are a fact of life, not Economics and unlimited wants only exist in theoretical models to have them make sense: it is a framework that other theories can be put on. As for Spontaneous Order, I'm pretty sure that it only exists in Classical Economic theory, and nothing else, as I have studied Keynsian and Monetary Economics and have never come across it as part of either theory.
