hmm... in my opinion, normally axe is supposed to be killing with counter helix. weapons not needed. only thing axe needs is double stout shield(which u can upgrade to vanguard). then u buy boots (later to BoT) and pump hearts.

late game axe isn't a killer. its a tank tts why it doesn't even matter if he can't kill with counter helixes, to quote ur "late game you cant do shit if you just stand there getting hit and expect them to die from counter helix".

As i said further down, i vary my item combinations depending on who i am up against. Since i wasnt really up against any strength heros i prefered to get basililus to harass and kill the low hp heroes in my lane.

You arent supposed to do dmg lategame, just sit around and get shot. (only had 7 characters left in the above post so i had to make a new one.)

And at "life steal helps him as much as any other hero(if not better)": rofl.. if u dont do much dmg then u dont get much hp from lifesteal, DPS heroes get the most from lifesteal.. axe gets just a bit more than nothing.
