When your friend dropped it, he jammed the spindle inside. That's the ONLY time the "Maxtor Musical of Death" triggers. I live by Maxtor and Samsung. I have a Maxtor that's nearly 11 years old. It only bsod'd once, due to a virus. Took time, but nothing's ever outlasted my Samsungs and Maxtors. As long as you know how to repair them, they run fine. Since this hard drive sounds like the head made contact with the media, see if you can hook it as a slave and transfer the data.
