This animation shows all scheduled flights over a 24h period (based on 2008 data). Every day 93'000 flights are starting from approx. 9'000 airports. At all time there are between 8'000 and 13'000 airplanes in the air. This animation was produced to be shown on the high definition 3D-Globe "Orbitarium" in Technorama - The Swiss Science Center in collaboration with Institute of Applied Information Technology InIT, Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur.

  • Is it only me that noticed some of the dots are just disappearing over the ocean?! lol

  • @kawentzmann. It may be balanced out by the increased albedo from the contrails, but this is uncertain. Contrails are a transient phenomena, whilst CO2 is a constant.

  • At any one moment, there are ~5000 planes flying in EU or US Air Traffic Control areas, during peak periods.

  • @hubachecka. They're trans-polar traffic. Airplanes fly great circle routes for best efficiency, so from the UK Asia & western North America are more or less over the Arctic.

  • @kawentzmann you bet

  • @kawentzmann Yes, planes are pretty bad. Ships are aweful, but planes are pretty bad too. : )

  • Does this cause global warming?

  • go Europe and USA! :]
