He still follows that old sampradayam of sitting with the left leg raised and folded outwards (a very difficult position for almost all mridangists today). A true laya yogi and mahavidwan!

is this a female or male mridangam?(length). And is the treble skin using the straw or the iron balls? Im asking because i like the tone of this mridangam. I know they come in difirent sizes which give difirent pitches and difent snare mechanism between the two skins on the treble. Help would be appreceiated.

This is a male mridangam. It is also the reed (straw) variety.
The reed type is called 'Kutchi mridangam'
The Iron ball type is known as 'Kappi Mridangam'
