Company #2MicrosoftHeadline: Sun Delays StarPortal Release

In a report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Sun Microsystems said will delay by almost a year, the release of its StarPortal upgrade to Suns Star Office software line.

In August, Sun spent about 73 million dollars to buy Germanys StarDivision and gained control of Star Office a multi-platform software suite that competes directly with Microsoft Office.

Sun markets Star Office as a free internet download from its StarPortal site and makes money by charging for customer service on the product.

The planned upgrade to StarPortal is expected to debut in the second half of 2000 instead of in 1999 like originally planned.

ON Wednesday, Sun closed up 7/8 at 113 3/16.
