  • @Tsobanian As far as I know he did.

  • @JupiterIV Did Ormandy orchestrate BWV 578? I know that Ormandy conducted the Bach / Wlliam R. Smith : Little Fugue BWV 578.

  • @Tsobanian Then there's Ormandy's performance of BWV. 578, which is where I've heard the bit of him taking credit for others' editions for orchestra of others' works.

  • @JupiterIV : At least, he commissioned Lucien Cailliet to orchestrate "Pictures at Exhibition". Do you want my take on this? I believe that the two powerful men of Philadelphia Orchestra, Leopold Stokowski and Eugene Ormandy, "misused" Cailliet. Perhaps Cailliet was doing most of the job and these two guys were just there to give general instructions and to take all the credit for the orchestration. Besides, Cailliet was the copyist of Stokowski. We will never find out the truth, though...

  • @Tsobanian IF I remember correctly, Ormandy commissioned others to make orchestrations that he could call his own. IF he did take the time to sit down and orchestrate it himself, like Stokowski did, then that's saying something.

  • @JupiterIV Yes it is a very idiosyncratic-idiomatic orchestration. Huzzah to Mr. Leibowitz. Actually people who have orchestrated Passacaglia & Fugue BWV 582 are : Leopold Stokowski, Ottorino Respighi, Rene Leibowitz, Hermann Boessenroth, Heinrich Esser, Alexander Goedicke, Eugene Ormandy, Sir Andrew Davis....

I guess there would be more, but this is what I remember now...

  • @cronosqc

    - Wow, what an excellent orchestration! This is truly refreshing, compared to the original for organ.

Indeed! I'm also starting to find this one superior to the one by the conductor Leopold Stokowski, by comparison.

    - En effet! Je commence aussi à trouver celui-ci supérieure à celle du chef d'orchestre Leopold Stokowski, par comparaison.

  • Wow! Excellente orchestration, c'est très rafraichissant par rapport à la version avec orgue!
