Brahms worked on his first sextet in the years 1859/60. The premiere took place on October 20, 1860 (Joseph Joachims's string quartet with two additional musicians).

I am playing here Brahms' own arrangement of the 2nd movement. Brahms gave it as a birthday present to Clara Schumann on September 13, 1860. Later, this transcription became one of his favorite pieces to play both in public and private concerts.

  • Thank you a valuable addition to my understanding of Brahms. It is wonderfully pianistic. I love pieces that occupy different territory such as the piano 5t op34. If only we had the original string 5t version said to be destroyed. But we do have the version as sonata for 2 pianos op34 bis. I've had fun over the years trying to orchestrate it.

  • This is just amazing... I think you're my hero, now.

  • warm... sweet...great...

    I love your performance...

  • I agree with klavigen's comments. You have a true feeling for music. By the way, I've always thought the major mode variation at 6:55 is so lovely. I didn't know Brahms had transcribed this movement. I will acquire it and play it. Thanks for posting and bringing this worthy transcription to the my and many others' attention!
