After some closer inspections of the root growth, I've come to the conclusion that there's not much difference in planting a tomato 6 inches deep, or 16 inches deep...with the exception of trying to get deeper roots for drought tolerance. I'm planting some in the greenhouse using the trench method. Its a quick and effective way to deal with seedlings that get away from you and have very long stems.

  • Thanks for this info, I actually learned alot. Maybe I can get my tomatoes to be more productive. I had wondered about how deep you should be planting the tomatoes.

  • @tjar12 I think it really depends on the soil and location. And also personal preference. Whether in a trench, or down deep, they both can be very effective.

  • I'd love to see the update at the end of the season on your finding, very interesting

  • @trungson Me too. So far, I'm seeing no difference in those 2 plants side by side. Still got a ways to go though.

  • just wondering did the thickness of the stalks increase in size/girth?

I have always planted deep because i felt it helped protect them while they

    hardened to the outdoors

  • @jethrob34 Pretty much all of my tomato stalks increase in size. It defies the laws of plumbing. If deep planting has been working, I wouldn't change a thing. :-)
