  • wich is normal for that age,its a miracle that she could even sing at that age......and proves to me once more that she is the greatest diva of all times :)

  • Donizetti's orginal version in F, the usual version in Eb, her version in Db. xD

  • @hammer555551 I think it was about Callas in reference to hearing Sutherland sing Lucia. Yes, acting wise, Callas was above everyone. But for vocal power, beauty of tone, and agility, I don't think Sutherland had anyone to fear. Maybe Nilsson for power, but different fachs. From what I've read, I don't think Sutherland was intimidated by Callas. However, I remember reading that after Callas said after seeing Sutherland in Lucia rehearsal and saying "This isn't good ... She's too good."

  • @ChrisStockslager I don't know about that. All I can re-call reading is Sutherland saying it about Callas. I wish I could remember what aria it was.

  • @hammer555551 Actually, if memory serves, I think it was Callas saying she'd never sing Lucia again after hearing Sutherland sing it in 1959.

  • no matter how hard I try, i can't dispell the notion that Sutherland is a well oiled machine. Her technique is always flawless, but there is never any emotion or emotional connection to the music.

  • Her technique was amazing and an example to generations to come. Her genius is not judged by the fact she didn't sing Eb here at the end of the aria! She is singing the role here 30 years after her debut. I think we can forgive the odd transposition. And judging by the way the audience went crazy, one can assume they didn't give a crap about transposition! :) Her legend is enough... the same with Callas during her 1974 final tour, her legend overcame her vocal decline. God bless them both!

  • Sutherland heard Callas sing, and said she would never sing that particular aria again, what was the use..............Callas was perfect.

  • @00193900 Just a few years........five maybe.....Callas was a Sagitarius.....(like me) we are SUPER GOOD or SUPER (not good) Sutherland a Scorpio,I was going to say....like all Scorpios was stubborn but dependable....and theerfore more middle of the Road...BUT HOW CAN I? lol SHE WAS THE ULTIMATE!! BETTER THAN ANYONE. So, so much for the astrology lesson! lol

  • I know that she's 62, and I know that she looks nothing like what a 17 year old Scotish girl should, but there is something that Is just so utterly believable about her Lucia. She convey's a combination of emotions and feelings in her singing - Sadness, Adoration for Edgardo, confusion. Importantly, Sutherland believes everyword she sings- Which is what makes her Lucia so much more believable that any modern day Lucia. Quite frankly, the crop of Lucia's that we must suffer today is just sad!

  • Ma perché l'ha abbassata di un tono? Avrebbe potuto cantarla nella tonalità originale senza eseguire la cadenza col mi bemolle sovracuto (mib5) in fondo, no?

But why did she sing it a tone lower? She could sing it in the original key without the cadenza with the Eb6, no?

  • Any one know what the age differance between Joan and Callas?
