The poet Robert Burns lived not long after the Jacobite Uprising of 1745/46. Following the conflict, many songs were written, usually in support of the Jacobite cause. But a few were written putting the government/Hanoverian point of view. When Burns was putting together a collection of songs he had found while going round Scotland, he found one of these and wrote his own version. While Burns had expressed sympathy for the French Revolution, he clearly had no liking for the Jacobites.

Ye Jacobites by name, now give an ear, give an ear,
Ye Jacobites by name, give an ear;
Ye Jacobites by name,
Your fautes I will proclaim,
Your docrines I maun blame - you shall hear!

What is Right, and what is Wrang, by the law, by the law?
What is Right, and what is Wrang, by the law,
What is Right, and what is Wrang,
A short sword and a lang,
A weak arm and a strang, for to draw!

What makes heroic strife, famed afar, famed afar?
What makes heroic strife, famed afar?
What makes heroic strife?
To whet th' assassin's knife,
Or hunt a Parent's life, wi' bluidy war!

Then let your schemes alone, in the State, in the State!
Then let your schemes alone, in the State!
Then let your schemes alone,
Adore the rising sun,
And leave a man undone, to his fate.

  • @sgtrummy True! And as true a highlander as any that went with the Jacobites!

  • My ancestors on both sides had to leave Scotland after the Jacobite rebellion. They came to North Carolina and here we are today.

  • Ignore that last comment it wasn't from me

  • At the end of the day the jacobites were Catholic. and where as some of you might like the idea that they were highlanders fighting for their freedom, in reality this wasn't the case. they were trying to overthrow a government for the sole reason they wanted to have a Catholic on the throne. As church of scotland, people in the north east, where i'm from, wouldn't have fought on the side of the jacobites. and we are higlanders.

  • and this is why I love Scotland...

  • @glasgow1234 If I chould put more then a thumb up,I would my friend.

  • Fuck burns - Jacobite til death!

    Stinkin traitors song.

  • What were Robert Burn's views towards the rebellion?

  • @RaynauddeChatillion: The performer of this song is a Hungarian musician named Arany Zoltan. He has a channel here on You Tube. Simply do a search on his name and you'll find a good deal of results. Hope that helps!
