A tribute video to an unjustly neglected African-American composer called Julius Eastman who composed in a very personal minimalist idiom.

  • These pieces are actually quite pedestrian compared to some of Eastman's other work. When I was studying music @ SUNY Buffalo in the late 70's, several trumpet players were recruited to play a piece using different lengths of garden hose. There we stood on stage, blowing thru our mouthpieces into garden hose...Julius' arms flailing as he conducted us. I played on a few other of Julius' pieces, some of which appeared on a posthumous CD release. Strange cat, amazing vocalist that few knew about.

  • he deserved much more of the world than what we gave him, r.i.p.
