Independence Day - McFarlane Regatta @ Waikiki 1 of 6

Happy 4th of July everybody! Or belated 4th anyway! Been trying to get this video uploaded since the 4th and finally had to lower the quality, if anybody wants a higher quality let me know, I'll bring it to practice for you.

Anyway we got 6 teams of ours into the invitational this year! A record for Pu'uloa OCC! It was a good day of racing camaraderie and of course surfing! This event utilizes open class steersman (& women) for the events and you can see why it's called a Surf Classic. The swells were only 3-5 feet but it provided a lot of excitement and close finishes for those that could catch the swells. Though there were plenty of close calls and crashes and huli's no one was seriously injured.

Race#1: Open Keiki, check out minute 2:42 during one of our Keiki's races you can see another canoe enter the picture and then suddenly flip over. What you don't see is the ama (outrigger) from the (almost) collision is being held aloft by our steersman and for the safety of both crews he just lifts it up the rest of the way and over they go. And flying the ama at minute 3:00 Good Racing!
