In the first video Lowe's Shop Class taught you how to put the posts into the ground. This time you will learn how to add more pieces to build the arbor.

There are several parts to the arbor: the main crossbeam, 5 spacers, two long rails, and 8 slats.
First, start with the crossbeam. Measure the distance between the arbor posts at the bottom and cut the crossbeam to that distance. When you attach the crossbeam at the top, it will pull everything into line, ensuring the poles are straight.

Use a clamp to hold the crossbeam level between the two posts and then use these construction fasteners to attach them to the post using a 18-volt impact driver. Remember ladder safety when doing this. Never go higher than what the manufacturer recommends, always work on a level surface, and when possible, have somebody else steady the ladder while you are up on it.

Next, add the spacers. Cut them on the miter saw, and each spacer has bevels on the bottom corners. Mark the angles, and then cut the first one on the miter saw. Then use that as a template for all the others.

Go back up the ladder and mark the positions of all the spacers and start with the middle one. Drill pilot holes and then attach the spacer to the center beam with screws -- angling the screws down through the spacer into the beam. Then attach the other four the same way.

Next for the rails and slats. The rails also have bevels cut on the end of each one and that are cut on the miter saw. Lay out the rails so they are one post width apart. Use a scrap post to make sure the spacing is right. Then, lay the slats out on top. Attach the slats to the rails using four screws per slat.

The final step in building this section is to give these slats a nice curved look. To do this, first mark the end points of your curve, as well as the center of the arcs with a pencil. Then, drive screws into the slats at those end points. Use a thin piece of wood or molding as a fairing stick. Bend it until it meets that arc center point. Trace the curve with a pencil, gently relax the board and then repeat for the other side. Use a jigsaw to cut the curves and then sand down any rough edges.

Now install the arbor piece on top the posts. Slide the rails down until the arbor piece is resting on the spacers, then attach the rails to the post using construction fasteners.

Now that you have completed the arbor, watch the next video in the series to learn how to add the fence sections: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-eWRYP7J5o
