Le vespe costruiscono il nido masticando minuscoli pezzetti di legno mescolati a saliva, fino ad ottenere un materiale simile al cartone. Il nido può contenere da poche centinaia a diverse migliaia di operaie e viene costruito solitamente in edifici (soffitte, solai) o in buche nel terreno. Come le specie affini, queste vespe sono predatrici e catturano mosche, bruchi, ecc., per la loro prole. Sono attirate anche da alimenti zuccherini, quali il nettare e i frutti maturi.
Pungono se disturbate, e possono farlo più volte, perchè il loro pungiglione, non è seghettato come quello delle api che , dopo due giorni muoiono, è liscio!
