A Different World Episode #60, Season 3
Whitley meets Julian, an attractive exchange student from Georgetown who is part of Hillman's anti-apartheid group. Kim receives a scholarship that will solve her financial problems and allow her to gain work experience in a lab, rather than flipping burgers at the Pit. Unfortunately, Freddie discovers that the company funding the scholarship is a subsidiary of a corporation with investments in South Africa. Julian proposes a boycott; he angers Whitley by recommending that Hillman cut all financial ties with the corporation, as this would cost Kim her scholarship. Due to her father's health problems, Kim would have to work two jobs to stay in school. A young man from South Africa argues against the termination of scholarships, because he feels that the success of African American students serves as a beacon of hope to black South Africans mired in poverty and oppression. Kim decides to turn down the scholarship anyway. Whitley accepts a date with Julian.

  • Gotta love Clarrence Peal, LOLOL!!!

  • I remember hearing that Julien and Whitley dated in real life. They made such a good-looking couple. I miss shows like this and the Cosby Show. They made you feel so good inside and so proud to be black.

  • @20kevron cont'd: just to help someone out, that is not being selfless but irrational, i bet that guy does not have to sacrifice anything at all

  • @dianh71 she was thinking too much about the shock value about whats going on in south africa, so much that she nearly destroyed her future, its fine to fight the power but do it sensibly, withdrawing her scholarship would have done more harm than good in real life i doubt she would be able to afford to send herself and work to school, plus that guy who was asking them to withdraw their scholarship is a selfish prick, i may want to give to africa but it does not mean i have to sell my house

  • @20kevron I have to agree with you--and I went to an HCBU during this era. I would've kept the scholarship and fought my ass off to make sure HIllman put pressure on Orange Glo and Haroldson Pharmaceuticals. There's a time to take a stand (and I've taken too many to count), but this situation didn't warrant the sacrifice. I "get" why Kim did it, though, and I respect her for it. There are other ways she could've paid the scholarship forward.
