But don't get me wrong, I want the mission to succeed in Afghanistan but I just don't see how our present course of action is leading to success.

The population will never trust a transient military force like ours. If they side with us, the next day they will have to deal with the Taliban themselves and explain why they have sold out to the foreigners.
As a permanent ally, the Taliban seems like a better bet right now for those people to side with. Especially considering the ISAF countries all have mandates to pull out with 2-3 years.
