Augmented Reality: Seeing Learning Through a New Light

Professor Bruce Thomas (Wearable Computer Lab, University of South Australia, Australia), the developer of first outdoor mobile AR game 'ARQuake', explored how augmented reality is and can impact on the learning process. Examples were given to demonstrate the concept. Augmented reality (AR) is used to describe the direct or indirect view of a real-world environment in which elements are augmented by computer-generated images.

This 'Transforming Assessment' event was hosted by University of Adelaide, Australia and started at 4.30pm CST on 4 August 2010: [approximate duration: 1 hour and 20 minutes - includes post presentation discussion].

  • I imagine like people using this combo to demo buildings that have yet to be build.

Take a Green screen room, (Big) with AR markers all around. The video would be taken from each persons own camera from their perspective, loop it through the computer, Chromakey the AR product(This allows people to not be overlapped by the 3dAR image)... Eh.. But I haven't seen anything like this... There are ton's of content showing off AR, but I haven't see TRUE applicable use for the average user yet.

  • Backpack computer+augmented reality software+3dcamcorder+VRglasses=awesomenesss.

I've been dreaming of that combination for a long time, but haven't seen anyone else put it to physical use. The camera sends the 3d live image through the computer, outputs the video with the augmented reality to the 3d glasses which give a realtime perspective(3d) of the object they are viewing. Would also like to see 3dscreen (like the nintendo 3ds) to view AR.
