Cool Stuff Being Made explores the manufacturing of fire engines: KME Fire Engines.
Location: Nesquehoning, PA
Filmed: 1997

KME builds fire trucks from the frame rails up. They manufacture their own chassis, bodies, cabs, tanks and ladders. John Kovatch III, son of company-founder John Kovatch, Jr., says KME's "niche" in the market is the company's ability to build a highly customized vehicle. A fire truck may take from 30 days to 9 months to complete, depending on the degree of customization.

those manufacturers can build as many as they want. What i am saying is that KME cares Pierceofshit doesn't and seagrave is only big because of nycity if they have it. every wacker needs it. My company has a pierce and we have had very few probs on the pierce end but that doesn't make them a good company there craftsmenship is horrible they don't care they will drop a truck off and not want to see you until its time for a new one KME wants you to be happy like my dept is with 2 of there trucks

KME must be one of the best my department has an 85 grumman 102ft rear mount tower to this day if we were to by the same truck from KME being they bought grumman in the early 90's it would be the same exact ladder with few changes it is the only company to profload every single ladder they build before it leaves for the customer no one else does that NFPA says manufacturers only have to proofload one ladder and as long as nothing has changed on the drawing board after it has passed the test

No not a sea-grave they have issues the day they leave the plant we have a 99 engine sadly we will not even consider buying from them again seems there is always a problem somewhere mostly electronic. We just ordered a new KME pumper tanker last month cant wait to see that thing
