I think it is to do with music in general. The short lifespans of the rabbits are allegorical of the piece of music itself (hence why they have violin stamps on their foreheads and the music ends and restarts when the timer stops and begins). I think this quote sums it up best: "[some songs] are painfully short and painfully beautiful. It's like your grandfather coming back from the dead and hanging out with you for a couple of minutes and then going away. It's perfect, then it's gone."

Maybe the first maker was initially a free animal..like humans once were..but the toils of ambition stole their lives away, forced to create and improve the most advanced thing they know of before they pass away..I am an evolutionist, but I think this story is a metaphor for the Adam and Eve style punishment for eating from the tree of knowledge..
