Designed and built in 1845 by Captain John Berry, the Old Orange County Courthouse is an imposing two-story, Greek Revival temple-form building. It has been described in Hamlins Greek Revival Architecture in America as one of the best of its type anywhere in the country. Its four-column, widely
spaced Greek Doric portico, its unusually forceful and well-designed cupola, and its quiet brick walls are almost perfect of their kind. One of the most honored of Hillsboroughs antebellum buildings
(listed in the National Register of Historic Places), the courthouse is set on a shady square that is
still the site of numerous local festivities. -http://www.nccourts.org/County/Orange/Documents/Orange_CourtHistory.pdf
