They were banned during the cultural revolution, perceived as bourgeoisie. But now pet dogs are making a comeback in China where they are seen as child substitutes.

"We look after our son when it's necessary but our dog suffered a lot before so we love him more", states one woman. For many families limited by the one-child policy, dogs have become the new children. The pet market in China is worth over $2 bn. But there is a downside to the dog explosion. Rabies has become the most dangerous infectious disease in China, surpassing even AIDS. Ten per cent of Chinese dogs are thought to be infected and as many as 6,000 people a month are attacked by dogs in Beijing.

Meanwhile, a good portion of the world has used dogs to fight battles that theyre too cowardly to fight themselves. And the dogs die. You seem to think that the end result between shooting and eating a dog are not the same. The animal dies. Why dont you treat pigs with respect? You can play with those too.

those scenes of the dogs crammed in those tiny cages and being abused like objects were hard to watch. I know it's a different culture but I honestly can't see how any human being can treat another living creature like that ="(

AND alot of rabies probably comes from eating wild dogs off the streets etc... It gets in your blood then the brain. And come on wouldnt it bve cheaper to have a LO cost vaccination clinics throughout china????
