William J. "Bill" Janklow, former South Dakota Attorney General, Governor and Congressman, died of cancer on Thursday, Jan. 12; he was 72. He was the state's longest-serving governor ever and played a pivotal role in molding the South Dakota we know today.
Janklow was Attorney General from 1974 to 1978, Governor from 1979 to 1987 and 1995 to 2003, and South Dakota's Congressman in 2003. His term in the U.S. Congress was cut short after he was convicted of manslaughter, a felony, after he was involved in a fatal traffic accident.
