  • @Vesivian :: This an Allegro Assai, rather fast, and then "piu allegro", faster - faster! The mood which Gould achieves is interesting, though, and very beautiful. I think Beethoven gave very fast metronome numbers (tempo in beats per minute) and researchers tend to think that it was because he couldn't hear the music and therefore did not "hear" (in his head) in a playable tempo. But as young he was famous for brillant, fast, vigorous playing.

  • I love his chair.

  • That's my favorite interpretation of this piece, whatever it really is.

  • Whats wrong with this? :)

  • absolutely love his Bach, but this? no

  • I'd say it's one of Gould's more successful Beethoven sonata recordings (I absolutely loathe most of his his early sonata interpretations). I hear nothing to indicate he hated the piece. On the contrary, it sounds like someone how has a deep love for the work, and wants to make a more personal statement of it. It is played with feeling and thought. Moreover, I wouldn't be surprised if people in Beethoven's day played it slower than is conventional today.
