Dan Penn and Donnie Fritts are co-authors of the song along with Gary Nicholson (aka Whitey Johnson). I first heard the song recorded by Dan on his 1994 release, "Do Right Man". Gary is credited on the cut playing "National Resophonic Guitar". Turns out he's a friend of a friend here in the Dallas area, too. I think he's originally from Garland, TX.
And, it's a I-IV-V blues, here in the key of D. Chords would be D-G-A7. In the bridge it's IV-I-IV-V before going back to the I.
gotta love old "Whitey" the legendary bluesman that time forgot." heard he got lost, hijacked, hit on the head, forgot his name and his color...fortunately he was rescued by that down home southern picker (south Canada is part of the dirty south ain't it?) Testify bros...and don't feel bad if Gary Nicholson & Colin Linden cop your sound...yeah man:)
