i hate the original. it looks dated and old. maybe becuz i love cgi. the original is just so stupid. this movie is one of the best movies ive ever seen. anyone who doesnt like it must be assholes.

when i watched this and read the book yeah they both connected but i don't care for the charlie version even though it's based on the book but yes it was like a remake on the wonka version. But yeah some of the characters were ok but most were blan. and the visual point was more on wonka than it was on charlie. and that's where it lost its touch cause it was more on wonka than it was on charlie cause charlie is suppose to be the main character not wonka.

As for the songs, they are far better. They came directly from the book, & sounded different. The songs in the old one all sounded the same & were poorly written. The Burton one stood far closer to the book & even did a better job in the ending. I'm sure Dahl would have loved how it the new one stood closer tot he book. Maybe he would not have liked it (he's notorious for hating all of his adaptions), but he would have appreciated how close to the book it was.

Just a quick point out, the new one is NOT a remake. Now I disagree with Veruca & Violet. Veruca was far meaner & more spoiled than she was in the old one. As for Violet, she is the type of girl who rubs it in your face, & that's what exasperates her from the others. And Gene Wilder can shut his trap because Tim Burton didn't make this for money, he wanted a more loyal adaption. The old one SUCKED so bad I wish I could hurt the people who worked on it. So all in all, the new one is superior.

I know people thinking of this movie as either a remake or not is debatable. If a newer film is based on a book and had an older adaptation like this, Planet of the Apes, Alice in Wonderland, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy for example, I would sort of consider them on the cost of being remakes after taking that into consideration, and that is being fair for both parties.

You made some nice points.
I do agree that the Veruca of the older version was nastier.
But I think it's good that they made Violet nasty too, just so you hate her.
Augustus was more of a pig in this one.
AS A FAN OF THE BOOK, Tim Burton's version is more accurate to the book.
The lyrics for the Oompa-Loompa songs were taken directly from the book.
Lines for the characters were taken directly from the book.
IT WAS SQUIRRELS, NOT GEESE.
Charlie DIDN'T drink fizzy lifting drinks.

I definitely agree with you that while I loved both movies, I barely enjoyed the Tim Burton one more. While Johnny Depp was good as Wonka, Wilder just barely wins, and the original has more songs with its share of originality, while the new has only five (four of which are taken from the book). But the new one excels in terms of supporting cast development, eye candy-grade visual effects, and a more complete story. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, though.
Great review!
This movie was actually pretty good! However, I sort of like the old one a little bit more, as I have fond memories of it. That & Johnny Depp is no Gene Wilder, if you ask me. But, I do think this is much closer to the book & I think it is worth a look.
Keep up the good work!
(By the way, Fantastic Mr. Fox was great! You should check it out, as it's a faithful adaptation & very witty & sophisticated).
