COZ was the best station Boston had at the time. Yes I thought they were better than BCN.

Kick Ass Rock and Roll WCOZ
Best station ever. Got me into so many bands when I was young that I still listen to now. Good times, man!

@MSTS1 Thanks. It must have been WHTT that replaced WEEI-FM around that time. I don't remember WMRQ at all, but I just took WODS off of all of my presets because of their obnoxious habit (now copied by 105.7) of playing nothing but Christmas music starting a whole month before Thanksgiving. If I could stand to listen, I'd boycott any sponsors that run ads on either station during this period.

@lrd9999 - Some of the calls for 103.3 in the 80's were WEEI-FM 'Softrock', WHTT 'Hit-103', WMRQ 'Q-103', and then WODS, 'Oldies 103'.

@TammiWayKewl You remember them better than I do. I thought they had given up anything that couldn't be called "kick ass" by 1982. I do remember a new top-40ish station that came on at 103.3 around that time though; it would play a little of that sort of thing. Don't remember the call letters.

@sheavepin WAAF stopped playing any punk or new wave after about 1980; after that they just tried to out-kickass the others. WCOZ was prototypical of today's robotic "classic rock" stations, reliable, predictable, but stale. WBCN was the only station that dared to play anything new or different, as least until WFNX got a 50,000 watt license.

Used to be a great station !!!! No disco !!

I believe Ken Shelton is over at WZLX 100.7 now

COZ SUCKED!!!! You kidding me??? The reason they rated high is because they were built to appeal to people who don't really like music. They like things that sound good btwn commercials. WBCN had thousands of songs in playlist and WCOZ beat them (for one year) by having ONE HUNDRED. John Sebastian was and IS a scoundrel who should be strung up by his teeny balls for his dedication to KILLING ROCK radio. YOU like COZ cuz you like STAIRWAY TO fucking HEAVEN every hour. BCN ruled, COZ suckd
-
COZ absolutely ruled. BCN and AAF were second and third, not necessarily in that order. AAF played more New Wave than anyone else as I remember.

I miss WCOZ. First started listening to COZ and FM radio my high school sophmore year at the suggestion of a friend of mine at the time. The first two songs I heard were "Roadrunner" by Johnathan Richmond and "The Angels Want To Wear My Red Shoes" by Elvis Costello. It was awesome. I never listened to AM Top 40 again.

The tag line used to be, "WCOZ! Kick-ass rock n' roll!

They changed over to WZOU (zoo) some time around 1985, and the jammin thing came later, but I don't recall exactly when..

WCOZ 1st went on the air in 1973. The 1st song they ever played was "Brown Sugar" by The Stones. In 1983 they went to classical music and the ratings bombed. Then by early 1984 it was the Zoo Station, WZOU (no relation to U2). At that time it went to Top 40 music and the mascot was the Cheetos cat, lol
But by 1988 when r&b and hip hop was getting big, WZOU changed to that kind of music and now we have crapola Jammin' 94.5.

Actually the older info. is a little different- Sometime around 1972, WHDH-FM 94.5 changed their call letters to WCOZ and format to 'Beautiful Music'. Later, in August '75 they abandoned that and switched to rock.
