John is describing that thoughts and feelings (pools of sorrow/waves of joy) he has as they pass by. He experiences them but they have no effect on him as they pass on their journey across the universe.

'Nothings gonna change my world' means:
accepting the concept of nothingness will change the way you experience the world.
This means that you should accept that nothing around you is real-everything is an artificial construct outside the reality of your soul.
This is John Lennon's way of saying 'There is no spoon'(from the matrix)
There is no reason to worry or become upset about things in the world since none of them are real. We recognize and accept them, learn from them, and move on.

There is something very special about this song. It brings tears to my emotions...when I hear this song I feel as we could live in an optimistic world. This is one of my all time favorite songs.
