I think this is one reason many foreign teachers don't give speaking tests. Multiple-choice written exams are far less depressing for both parties.
Seriously though, in my lowest proficiency/motivation classes, the text is too hard and administrative expectations too high, so in my one-on-ones, I just ask the student to recall 5 things they remember from the previous chapter (a mix of grammar, vocabulary and content). For those who didn't prep, it's over as soon as it starts...:)

I have a LOT of empathy for your student - I'm positive this is EXACTLY what my ASL conversations "sound like" to my teachers or deaf acquaintances.
Q: I'm not positive about what you were hoping to elicit from picture #1...
They usually "ignore each other in favor of media consumption?"

@Elaina43 Question one was to use the present simple. That's all.. I mean, "everything!" He could have said, They usually wear shoes, they usually watch TV, they usually sit in the living room, etc...
