Having watched this piece develop over the span of about three years, I have to take issue with the "pile of notes" people. This song reflects a journey. Listen for the train pulling out of the station, rattling down the tracks, stopping for fuel, pulling out again, reaching its destination.... just as another train pulls away from the platform.
@rdomain The setup is pretty basic these days: Parker Adrian Belew Signature Fly Deluxe, equipped with Sustainiac pickup at the bridge position, and on-board Vari-Axe technology. Ade feeds this directly to a Fractal Audio Axe-FX Ultra; the speakers are Atomic (in partnership with Fractal) powered wedges. The Liquid-Foot Pro selector pedal is also a Fractal Audio piece. As for techniques.... what Adrian told me was "practice. a LOT." I disagree with those who heard this as a "pile of notes."
Belew is a very psychological artist. The question isn't what emotions he is exuding but how this music makes you feel. There is smoe sort of composition or theme going on, an expression, but brainier than rock n roll.
It think it's all about expression and perception. It is art? Still that is a presumption based on some knowledge of the context, with all due respect to objective and subjective perception. The professionalism here is supreme, expression is the key though. As a composition I personally think this is an expression of the artist and technology. There’s a lot going on here but it does take a prepared mind to fully appreciate it?
@christopherzberlin I was thinking exactly the same thing. It takes some skill, and Adrian is one of the best musicians in the world, but this song seems to lack any emotion. Like you said "... a pile of notes". They can't all be zingers, I guess. Adrian still has some great stuff that is inspiring.

Astonishing. As usual, utterly unique and innovative. I was lucky to see him at Gateshead Sage last year. Brilliant. There's only one Adrian Belew.
