Mayb he is trying to prove that he actually beleives in his heart that the war in Iraq is worth risking the lives of our bravest, most tallented, and most intelligent people. Although i don't agree with this, mayb he didnt fight in combat during nam was because he didnt believe in risking our lives for the vietnamese...

watch it again! he states "a lot of people ran and a lot of people hid from Vietnam so i wouldn't hold it against you" quite clearly he isn't criticizing him for not serving.
He is criticizing him for trying to insinuate that if he wasn't too old (or the president) that he would be in the thick of it. which can be assumed to be a lie as he has had a chance at that very thing and ran.
