Dark Messiah is a semi-progressive 2006 PC game with flashy gameplay and great graphics, but was marred by some repetition, a derivative story line and a limited skill tree.
Though the biggest mistake the game designers made was the placing of traps virtually everywhere enemies are found.
The game features fast paced melee combat, an outstanding musical score and great voice acting and is well worth playing.
I wondered if it would be possible to actually play the game on Hardcore without receiving any damage from enemies, without relying on the many traps.

Take a look at Ubisoft's engines, they're designed for third person action games, Prince of Persia, Assassin's Creed, sports games.

They didn't have the engine for a high quality First Person game, and they probably didn't want to spend too much time on developing one for a single, medium popular game.

Source works with the rough-and-tumble look of the game.

There's limited character creation, but it's an action adventure game, not an RPG. There's no comparing it to Oblivion, it's completely different.
