Unlike other composers, I do not like to be the center of attention. In fact, for some time I have not enjoyed even the process of composition and have not been writing music. But a terrorist act in Moscow shook me so deeply and the music that I began to hear after it played over in my head with such persistence again and again, day in and day out, month after month, that I was compelled to write it down in the hope that once set free it would release me.
Concerto Grosse Is dedicated to the victims of the terrorist act in Moscow on October 23-26 2002, the audience of the musical Nord-Ost in the building of the Theatre Center at Dubrovka. And it is not only for them, but for the victims of all terrorist acts committed on the grounds of religion.
Unfortunately, states and governments, which today are playing games with terrorist regimes, will find out too late that what is justified in our time as a struggle of liberation is in fact the beginning of a religious war of certain strains within the Islamic world against all the rest. I fear that they will understand this only after this particular war expands into a catastrophe for all humanity. (May the Lord forgive Russia which build an nuclear power station for those who sooner or later will use nuclear weapons against non-Muslims! May the Lord forgive Russia for the fact that history has taught it nothing!)
The premier of Concerto Grosso took place in St. Petersburg on March 10 2005. It was performed by the Youth Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre under the direction of Tugan Sokhiev.
Really touching and amazing to see (and hear) that those victims are not forgotten.
