This short TV documentary is an introduction to the issue of shadeism, the discrimination that exists between the lighter-skinned and darker-skinned members of the same community. This documentary short looks specifically at how it affects young womyn within the African, Caribbean, and South Asian diasporas. Through the eyes and words of 5 young womyn and 1 little girl - all females of colour - the film takes us into the thoughts and experiences of each. Overall, 'Shadeism' explores where shadeism comes from, how it directly affects us as womyn of colour, and ultimately, begins to explore how we can move forward through dialogue and discussion.

  • I loved your mini documentary, I wish there was more! I live in a South East Asian country where fair skinned girls are considered beautiful and any other race that isn't fair, is not... My country's media is filled with images re-enforcing that to be fair is to beautiful. Thank you for bringing light of this issue that there is such a thing as intra racism, which I find is very sad yet very true. Are you thinking of extending this documentary?

  • @GoddessOfWhine Thank you for watching. This isn't my documentary. I saw this video on vimeo and I tried to search for it on YouTube but I didn't find it. So I decided to upload it so that others will have a chance to view this documentary. I will send you the link where I got this video from. Perhaps the person's channel from vimeo is the owner.

    Thanks :)

  • Dk skinned women shouldnt mad at not being shown as hoes in music videos..damn parents do your job..stop letting, the tv babysit ur child

  • @vpt08ae1023 ye exactly, pale white people are always told by their own white people that they are too pale. redhaired white people are made fun of much more than darkskin black people are in the black community.

  • Excellent & insightful documentary - this should be standard viewing in schools. Very good work. Rather worrying that these cultural narratives are still being perpetuated and to an extent, solidified in the media. Echoes from the past somehow still with us today.

  • A Indian lady said "perhaps if Africa Colonized the World then dark skin would be deemed as beautiful"

  • i guess that happens everywhere in the world, because i have a mother who comes from the east of Africa Ethiopia to be specific! and people there adore light skin women! my mum is one, so she has always been consider the epiphany of beauty! however to my luck my mother and her infinite wisdom always told me not to let this ignorant comes become the true in my eyes! and that beauty had nothing to do my skin colour! so i never felt this way.

but this segregation exist, believe it!

  • I am caucasian and have big curly hair. I some times get mistaken for being half black, latina etc. And I love those compliments. But the truth is, watching your so inspiring and well-made video, it is important not to prefer ANY color of skin over another. I like my white skin but I also love brown skin, black skin, ANY skin. The issue that we have here is a messed up illusion that a certain background is better than the other The REALITY is that what makes the human race beautiful is diversity

  • None of the women should want to be in those videos, where they call women bitches and hoes.

  • I think it is more to do with being what beauty is rathar than a racial thing. Otherwise being very pale would be considered the top of beautiful. Bit its not. Tan, light brown or honey is considered beauty not white or black, which is what most people are. Nothing to do with race which is important not to think that way.

  • very good !!!
