Exercising is a VERY EFFECTIVE way to burn calories. But it's NOT a very good way to manage your weight IF YOU ARE EXERCISING TO BURN OFF EXCESS CALORIES. It's not a good strategy to MANAGE and CONTROL your weight on a long term basis.

What happens is this: many people will eat too many calories in a day. They might have a big dinner with a huge dessert--ice cream, whipped topping, caramel topping, candied nuts, and more.

Then they try to burn off those excess calories through exercise. Because there isn't a good or accurate way to determine how many calories a person burns during exercise, they often overestimate the number of calories they burn during exercise. This means that they just gained some weight--maybe a lot of weight. And they are thinking that they just lost some weight doing the exercise.

Some people use "activity charts" or "activity calculators" that they find on-line to determine how many calories they burn doing an exercise. But, unless an "activity calculator" lets you enter your height, gender, age, weight, duration of your exercise, and the number of heartbeats per minute (or some other accurate measure of INTENSITY), then it's going to be inaccurate and you'll probably get an overestimate of the calories burned.

My point is this: starting "in the hole" and exercising to get out of that calorie-excess hole is a terrible technique for WEIGHT MANAGEMENT. Sure, use exercise to burn calories--but NOT to control or manage your weight because you have to exercise to "break even" first, before you can exercise even longer and harder to lose weight. And that's the problem if you're trying to lose weight. You have a lot of exercising to do just to get to the point where your body can begin to burn fat.

Here's my weight loss tip: "The best way to control and manage your weight is to control and manage the calories that you eat. By doing this you can create a fat-burning calorie deficit each day." Using this method, your body burns the food that you eat for energy, but it also burns fat every day that you create a calorie deficit.
