From a strictly linguistic point of view "Macedonian" can be called a Bulgarian dialect, as structurally it is most similar to Bulgarian.
"Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics", Keith Brown, 1994
but of course state propaganda teaces Fyroms people that their Bulgarian dialect is related ancient Macedonian(that was a Greek dialect). Poor poor people totally lost
" ...Your ancestors came to Macedonia and the rest of Hellas and did us great harm, though we had done them no prior injury. I have been appointed leader of the Greeks, and wanting to punish the Persians I have come to Asia, which I took from you..."
During Roman Empire Makedonia was a part of Greece.
Under the Romans GREECE was seperated in TWO provinces, ACHAIA and MAKEDONIA. The province Achaia included Peloponnese and the rest of the southern parts of Greece till the periphery of Makedonia and had as capital CORINTH.
The Romans were those who separated Greece in 2 Provinces, ACHAIA and MAKEDONIA.
"Macedonia and Achaia" generally means the whole of Greece (Acts 19:21; Rom 15:26; 1 Thess 1:8)
During Byzantine Era Makedonia was a part of Greece and Thessaloniki was the spiritual and trading centre of the Byzantine Empire. Thessaloniki was the Second City of the Empire and gained the honorary title of "Symvasilevousa" [the co-reigning city].

@CoolJegerJ No one in the world connects your Bulgarian dialect that was renamed to 'Macedonian" in communist Yuogoslavia with any ancient languages.
You are mislead by your state propaganda. I feel sorry for you.

During Ottoman occupation Makedonia was still considered as part of Greece.
The Tsar of Russia, Alexander II, declaring the war against Turkey, 24-4-1877 stated:
"The refusal of Turkey to accept a betterment of the conditions for the christians of the GREEK peninsula, forced Russia to take up arms."
