I read somewhere that the mosquito bites don't itch. They inject saliva while they're feeding on you and then take it out when they leave. But the reason there is an itch is because the saliva is left in when the mosquito flies away once the human sees it and hits/flicks/waves it away mid-feed. The saliva is the itchy part, not the bite itself. Apparently.
