Um, there are anti static gloves out there fyi for those clownin on him for not wearing a wrist band. If you're going to upgrade, id def upgrade to either ssd or even 7.2k or higher rpm HDD's. Not that ive seen anyone done it, i just thought a way to just use a External Hard drive that hooks up with SATA and connect it into the ps3, as for power, outlet ftw. And btw even if you get SATA II, that does not make ur ps3 SATA II AND it is 100% not backwards compatible therefore useless.

@WhiteLionness Give OnLive a look, it may suit your needs. No repairs, and the PlayPack is the most "bang for buck" deal I've ever seen. Also, try getting a USB closure if you're hesitating selling your 500gb. If you don't know what a usb closure is, basically it's a case for a HDD that converts it into a USB External HDD. Watch some online tutorials on how to put it on a HDD.

@TheUserUndefined Yeah I heard about that, that 7200 RPM can cause the YLOD. Don't worry, I wont try it. Besides, I've gone broke from buying 2 hdd's anyway lol. Although I'll probably sell the 500 gb.

@WhiteLionness Oh good. Btw, there is hardly a difference between 5,400rpm andf 7,200rpm (ON THE PS3, NOT PC). And if you use a 7,200 rpm HDD you're more likely to cause your ps3 to over heat or system lock. Just warning you. You can use an SSD for more speed (again, the PS3 cannot use it's full potential) without temperature being too high (in fact, it should be lower) but I'm not sure if the system will have it's lock ups. But if you can't afford repairs, then SSD would be impossible ;)

@TheUserUndefined Thanks for the response! Yeah I thought about it, but sadly the system isn't under warranty and I can't afford $180 for repairs. It's all good though, since then I did a slight downgrade to a Seagate 320 GB HDD and it fixed the problem.

@WhiteLionness Call up Sony, don't worry, messing with the HDD of a PS3 does not break the warranty.
My grandson wants a PS3 60gb cause of the backward compatibility. I found one for good price, but wondering if I replace HDD with Seagate Momentus 5400 320GB 5400RPM SATA before he uses it will I still need to do a backup? I may be computer lit, but know nothing of gaming systems.

@groundinghubris if you use 2.5inch HDD, you can easily replace. And you don't have to backup.
PS3 60GB(first model) can run with blank HDD you bought.
When you turn it on ,the system will automatically begin the installation.
Good luck!
