@sed1268 But a few years you mean 30 between refuling. That's how the first generation plants rolled? Store safely, remeber that time since that atom was split, there has been a nuclear waste storagage accident? No me either, cus there never has been one. And forgive my favorite, what was the worst Nuclear Accident In American history? Oh,Three Mile Island of course. How many died again? Zero? No go ccuppy a porta potty and learn some science! Oh & dump Obama too,he's a do nothing lazy douche

You knwo who could really use the Plutonium, NASA! Our final Deep Space probe launces in 10 hours ever. NASA has no plutonium, DOE is not allowed to make plutonium. I'd like to think D.O.D. has some, but that's probably withful thinking Bunch a damn weak ass presidents! And if want to protect ourselves in war we'll have to buy Plutonium from the Russians. That's what it's come to!

"Clean" nuclear energy is an oxymoron. This is a violation of President Obama's campaign promises. The nuclear material necessary for this project will yield at best a few years of power and require infinite resources and thousands of years to store safely. This is NOT renewable, clean, safe, or affordable. Obama is bought and kept by the nuclear industry. DUMP OBAMA.

This is amazing BS. Totally ignoring all the dangers. Clean nuclear is possible but is ignored by US policy.

I love all these engineers telling us how safe nuclear power is. We have been being told for 50 years how safe nuclear power is. I would not believe these guys anymore than any con man on the planet. Renewable and bio are the best energy paths to take. At least the poison release dance will stop with these sources. Nuclear is lose lose poison poison scenario. Lying is SOP for nuclear power industry lying is their trade in information and history.

@Bonez0r, "it's an old design" they said that when 3 mile island blew, and again when Chernobyl blew. I remember when they used to say a meltdown was a once in 10,000 year probability. More like once in 10 years from experience.

real clean now eh ?

Just a side note, the reactor design at Fukushima is 35-40 years old, absolutely not up to today's standards.

what a shame - fukushima is calling

Sometimes in life its hard to be right. In light of the tragic events in Japan, the world is now seeing the total cost of nuclear. There is no such thing as SAFE nuclear. When will they use all that technology to actually do something good for once?
And to further answer your question from before, the nuclear waste which we can process to have a half-life of a hundred years could be contained, as opposed to other emissions which are probably more deadly which are produced by fossile fuel plants. Most reactors are rediculously over-engineered. We just need to make sure that the standards set are followed everywhere, which is a major problem I admit.

The fuel that would be left over is fission products, which can't be made into bombs at all, although these products are highly radioactive, they only have a half-life of 100 years or so. This is certainly better. And the Plutonium made could be used peacefully and not made into bombs. So what if we did this and we got all this Plutonium to deal with? Well, other countries already to this. America is behind. If everyone else is doing it, why aren't we?
