The context is to note here, the enemies of Islam had persecuted, with hostility, the Muslims for 13 years. The reason why they were facing this opposition was that the enemies did not like the influence of Islam and also because the Muslims were not defending themselves as a people since they were instructed to act with patience and forgiveness. The Holy Quran did not have yet these verses. It was when the enemies did not leave the Muslims alone, even after they migrated to another city, that these verses were revealed and included in the Holy Quran.

For the Image on the 9th Second, verses 192 to 194 of ch. 2 of Holy Quran:
Islam's book, the Holy Quran, claims to give a complete way of life. It would not be a very good way of life if with no instructions for its followers to defend themselves, right? If you read these verses, you will notice the very first verse to make it a condition that you can fight only when someone has fought you, if a Muslim fights otherwise the sin is on him/her!
Immediately after that the Muslims have been instructed Not to Transgress by fighting unnecessarily because Allah does not love the transgressors! Then next there are instructions for a war zone which instructs Muslims to kill their enemies and to retrieve what was taken from them by the enemies. How is this any different from a nation's strategy to defend themselves? However, in [2:193] you will notice that the Muslims have been instructed not to carry out the preceding instructions if the enemy desists!
In [2:194] once again the condition is laid that the Muslims can fight the enemies only until there is no more persecution against the Muslims and there is freedom of religion. So killing the enemies is not the purpose here, obviously, it is to put an end to persecution and to establish freedom of religion!
Finally the Muslims have been strictly instructed against bringing any sort of hostility upon the enemies "if they desist" and if they have stopped persecuting. Evidently, these instructions are only to stop the harm being brought upon people by aggressors! When the Muslims fought in earlier times, they were strictly forbidden to harm, even while at war with a nation, the children, women, the elderly, and the means of livelihood!
War in the cause of God is only allowed in Islam to put an end to persecution/killings, to secure the belongings of people, and to defend freedom! This is the only time war is allowed in Islam, it is only then that it is a defensive war and a part of "Jihad".The Jihad of defensive war is declared, by the Founder(pbuh) of Islam, as the Smaller Jihad and the bigger and greater jihad is brought about actually in daily life; The struggle for bringing about positive changes in oneself is the Greater Jihad!
So this is Islam's teaching on war and/or jihad, if the Taliban and extremists see this, they will declare open war on Islam too, I am sure of it! Their agenda is to take control by force and to spread disorder, and Islam is in no way on their side!

"Allah" literally means "The God" -
The above verse 40 is also used by extremists to incite hatred against non Muslims in the hearts of naive uneducated Muslims. But they would leave out the conditions that have to be present for a defensive war which is the only kind of war allowed in Islam. In these verses, there is an explanation as to why the permission has been given to fight in the first place.
In verse 40 the permission to fight is given only to those who have been made war against and those who have been wronged. Stolen property and persecution of belief is also a reason. Next, there is another reason explained for allowing Muslims to defend as a people, that is, that if such an instruction was not given there would not have been a way to stop attacks (by enemies of a faith) to shut down cloisters, churches, synagogues, and mosques where the name of God is remembered. So Islam strives for the freedom of all religions and the Jihad or Holy War it teaches about is for people to act upon in case of persecution of any faith!
If someone fights without having the presence of all these conditions, the sin is upon him/her! If the Taliban or any extremists see this and understand that Islam is in no way on their side, they will not hesitate to declare war on Islam as well!

The fact is that now is the time of the Messiah and Guided Leader prophesied in Islam to appear, who also was to put an end to war. So in late 1800s a man appeared and made claim to that office. He declared that Jihad of War is now forbidden in Islam. He argued that you defend in the like of the attacks by your enemy, and since attacks these days on Islam are intellectual, he declared this The Era of the Jihad of the Pen. His name was Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of a Tiny hamlet called Qadian in India.

Final point to note here is that Islam has not been in its intended shape for the past 1400 years. After the fall of the true successor-ship of the Founder(pbuh) of Islam, the Muslims have been a body without a head! So to look at Muslims as a nation to be a representation of Islam is not but the judgment of a naive and uninformed mind.
