hickock is revealing his guilt and regret and doesnt want to lead a "normal" life, he wants charlie to let him keep boozing and gambling because to him its both an addiction (alcohol) and a figurative hell hes put himself in for both repentance and punishment (its alluded in this scene that he knows it will lead to nowhere but dead)

Does anybody know what exactly Hickok means? Is he unhappy and looking to, in a sense, kill himself? What is he "supposed" to be and what is he actually? And why doesn't he wanna fight it anymore?

It's a really powerful scene that I like. I just don't understand it.
