Namah Shivayah is a mantra in the centre of Namakam, Sri Rudram, Yajur Veda. As it is composed of 5 syllables,Namah Shivayah is also known as the 5-syllabled mantra or the pancha akshara mantra. As the mantra is about Lord Shiva, it is also known as the Shivapanchaksharamantra.

Adi Shankaracharya, who also identified the 3 most important parts of the Mahabharata: Bhagavad Gita, Sanat Sujata and Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram, expanded the Shivapanchaksharamantra for us. He has done this in both ways: phonetically, taking each syllable and analytically, giving the inherent meanings.

The first and the fifth verses reflect each other in the description of the Lord's Absoluteness. The second and the fourth verses also reflect each other as both have worship as the theme: the second by ordinary humans and the fourth by great sages and divinity itself. The third verse is the only one in which Parvati is mentioned, in which the destructive aspects are mentioned, in which the relationship of the Lord with the universe is mentioned: He drinks the poison and turns His own neck blue, His flag is dharma. Understood thus, this hymn is like a flower, with each verse being a petal, except the third, which is the core of the flower.

By thus making us think, reflect and contemplate, he teaches us even now. Although the hymn is used in daily worship, it can also be used for meditation. At the end of the hymn, he gives the results that can accrue with daily devoted practice. Liberation is not one of these, the association of Lord Shiva is.
